Washington Football

The Washington Redskins are an amazing football team based in Washington D.C.  It was established in 1932 and is one of the most valuable teams in the U.S. at around $1.6 billion.  It’s also the first team to have an official marching band and first fight song called “Hail to the Redskins.”  This great team has won 3 Super Bowls and 5 NFL Championships.

The history of the name “redskins” comes from Native Americans and is used as an expression of solidarity for those who went to Washington D.C. to talk about policies regarding Native Americans.  Four players and the coach of the first team identified themselves as Native Americans.

There has been some controversy about the name “redskins” and how it perceives Native Americans.  However, the Navajo Code Talkers, a group of Native Americans, have supported the team and its use of the name.  In 2014, there was a national survey conducted that resulted in 83% of Americans wanted to keep the Redskins name.  There have also been many support videos made from Native Americans who also supported the team name.

An interesting fact about the team winning the Super Bowls is that Head Coach Joe Gibbs led the team to all 3 wins.  He has also taken the team to 4 Super Bowls.

So far, the team is doing great, and we wish them all the support from their fans.
